The new gTLD Subsequent Procedures Working Group - the people who have been working on developing a proposal for how the next round of Top Level Domain applications may work - has issued its initial report on what changes or additions need to be made to existing new gTLD policy recommendations for the next round to open. The report has been published and now is the time for interested parties to provide comments and shape the next round.
The document includes materials from the full Working Group and four sub-teams within the Working Group, Work Tracks 1-4. Work Track 5, focused on Geographic Names and the Top-Level, will produce a separate Initial Report.
Following review of public comments, the Working Group will integrate public comments received as it works towards recommendations for inclusion in its Final Report.
We currently estimate the following key dates in the timeline to the opening of the next round of applications:
- Q1 2019 Working Group submits final report
- Q3 2019 - ICANN Board adopts recommendations and implementation begins
- Q1 2021 ICANN starts accepting applications
